A few months ago, I was invited to take part in a project entitled 'Endless forms, most beautiful', devised by Northern Print. Printmakers were invited to make a print of an at-risk species. I was immediately keen to work on an animal which I'd seen in the wild myself, and one which lives close to home. I have seen red squirrels in Northumberland over the past 20 years, and one even in my back garden in Newcastle upon Tyne.
The print marks a new departure for me, as I'm not usually a wildlife artist, but I so enjoyed building up the layers of texture in the fur - I love the cutting part of the printmaking process and this was definitely an enjoyable challenge!
This is a reduction print, meaning I used a single block of lino and cut into the same block several times, building up the colour with each print. In the end, I printed 14 layers on the squirrel and the branch he's standing on. This print is in a very limited edition of just 5 prints.
The prints are sold unframed. The print size is 28x19cm and the paper size is A3.
The paper is Kent printmaking paper. Each print is named, numbered and signed by myself.
